Emergency: Kangana Ranaut’s Indira Gandhi Biopic Coming to Netflix

Fans of Kangana Ranaut’s critically acclaimed film “Emergency,” a biographical drama depicting the life and times of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will soon be able to stream the movie from the comfort of their homes. Ranaut made the announcement via social media, revealing that “Emergency” will be released on Netflix on March 17th.

The film, which debuted in theaters on January 17th, garnered ₹21.65 crore gross in India, according to Sacnilk.com. Directed and starring Kangana Ranaut as Indira gandhi, “Emergency” boasts a stellar supporting cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.

A Controversial Story on Screen

“Emergency” faced a series of challenges leading up to its release, including censorship issues and protests from Sikh groups who alleged that the film misrepresented historical events and Sikh perspectives. In August last year, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sent a legal notice to the film’s producers, demanding the removal of scenes deemed offensive to Sikhs.

Critical Reception: A Balanced view?:

The Hindustan Times review of “Emergency” provided a balanced perspective: “Emergency doesn’t seem to harbour a wish to whitewash or tarnish Indira’s actions. What happened under her watch during the Emergency, her son Sanjay Gandhi’s death- Kangana, the director, has tried to keep it balanced. As the role demands, Anupam delivers a restrained performance, while the late Satish proves his mettle in just one line. What an actor! Emergency’s scramble to cram as much as possible into one film lets it down. It’s watchable if you want to see good acting.”

The film’s impending arrival on Netflix promises to spark further discussion and analysis of Indira Gandhi’s legacy, her impact on Indian politics, and the controversial period of the Emergency.

Given Kangana Ranaut’s history with controversy, how did the production of “Emergency” impact her relationship with Bollywood?

Kangana Ranaut: From Actor to Director

Archyde: After earning critical acclaim for your performance as Rani Lakshmibai in Manikarnika, you’ve stepped into the director’s chair with Emergency. What inspired you to tackle the story of Indira Gandhi?

: Indira Gandhi’s life and leadership have always fascinated me.Her journey from a reluctant political entrant to becoming the first and, so far, only woman Prime Minister of India is nothing short of inspirational. I wanted to bring this lesser-known side of her life to the forefront through Emergency.

Navigating Controversies and Censorship

Archyde: The film faced several controversies, including pushes back from Sikh groups. How did you navigate these challenges?

: Making a ancient biopic is complex. We did extensive research and took creative liberties to tell Indira Gandhi’s story longitudinally. We regret if any community feels misrepresented, but our intent was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments. We’re unfortunate that these controversies selecting into the narrative of the film.

Historical Accuracy and Storytelling Balancing Act

: It’s indeed a challenge to portray historical events accurately without making the film a mere list of facts. We aimed to present Indira Gandhi as a human being, with all her complexities, struggles, and triumphs, rather than a political figure. I believe that’s what makes Emergency engaging and relatable.

Indira Gandhi’s Legacy and the Emergency Period

Archyde: What do you hope viewers take away from your film regarding Indira gandhi’s legacy and the Emergency period?
