Elton John Calls Marijuana Legalization ‘One of the Greatest Mistakes’

A recent interview highlighted music icon Elton John’s stand against the ongoing wave of legal marijuana across North America.

John, named Icon of the Year by Time magazine, shared his opinion on the topic, stating, "Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time."

The singer-songwriter expressed his belief that marijuna is addictive and acts as a gateway to stronger drugs. "I maintain that it’s addictive. It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned—and I’ve been stoned—you don’t think normally," he explained.

This stance aligns with John’s personal journey. He has been sober since 1990 and is actively involved in supporting others battling addiction. John is known to be Eminem’s sponsor and has helped organize Robbie William’s first rehab experience. He also reached out to George Michael in an attempt to help, though sadly, the connection was unsuccessful.

When asked about Statesman, John’s husband, David Furnish, who is also sober, joined the conversation. Furnish acknowledged that alcohol holds a clear cultural significance. However, he also pointed.

John further touched on the closing of his Broadway musical, Tammy Faye, shared his reasoning for declining the opportunity to be a judge on televised talent shows, and reflected on the strained relationship he had with his late mother.

Earlier this year, John achieved EGOT status, becoming the 19th person to hold this remarkable accomplishment. He also collaborated with Orville Peck and the late Glen Campbell and performed alongside Joni Mitchell. Additionally, the legendary performer revealed he experienced a severe eye infection. A new Disney+ documentary about John titled Never Too Late premieres this Friday, December 13th.
