Elaine C Smith: Honestly, it’s surreal, Fiona! It’s such a huge honour to be placed alongside people I admire so much, like Sir Billy Connolly and the late Nelson Mandela. It’s incredibly humbling.
The imagery of you grazing cattle on Glasgow Green was fantastic. What was it like exercising that particular freedom?
Elaine C Smith: (Laughs) Oh, it was brilliant! Siusan, the Highland cow, was a total star. It was a bit daft, a bit theatrical, but it also served as a great reminder of the history and tradition behind the freedom of Glasgow. Plus, seeing the look on people’s faces was priceless! It’s not every day you see cattle on Glasgow Green, is it?
You’re known not only for your comedy but also for your passionate advocacy for women’s rights and other social causes. How do you see those two aspects of your life – entertainment and advocacy – intersecting?
Elaine C Smith: They’re inextricably linked,Fiona. Comedy can be a powerful tool to highlight crucial issues and reach people in a way that a dry lecture never could. If I can make people laugh while also planting a seed of awareness or encouraging them to think differently about something, then I feel I’ve done my job properly. It’s about using my platform for good, really.
