A roaring ’20s Musical Coming to Life on the Guild Playhouse Stage
Published:
PARKERSBURG, WV – The Actors Guild of Parkersburg is set to transport audiences back to the roaring twenties with their upcoming production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Auditions for this award-winning musical are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday and monday, April 27 and 28, at the Guild Rehearsal Hall, located at 724 Market St. The curtain will rise on July 25 at the Guild Playhouse on Market Street, promising an evening of flapper-era glamor, comedic mishaps, and unforgettable musical showstoppers.
For those eager to get a head start, an optional audition workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, also at the Rehearsal Hall. This workshop offers prospective auditionees the chance to familiarize themselves with the vocal selections, script readings, and choreography, as well as meet the dedicated creative team behind the production. This preparation can be especially beneficial for those new to the audition process or those wanting to brush up on their skills.
“The Drowsy Chaperone” distinguishes itself with a unique narrative framework. As the Actors Guild describes, the story “opens in the apartment of the lonely and endearing ‘Man in Chair,’ who plays his favourite recording of a forgotten 1920s musical. As the record spins, the characters spring to life, complete with flapper-era glamor, comedic mishaps and musical showstoppers, a tipsy chaperone, mistaken identities, tap-dancing gangsters and other revelations.” This meta-theatrical approach, where a character comments on and interacts with the musical itself, offers a layer of humor and engagement that resonates with modern audiences.
The musical is a celebration of the Jazz Age, a period of significant cultural and societal change in the United States. Following world War I, the 1920s saw an explosion of artistic expression, economic prosperity (for some), and a loosening of social constraints. This era is known for its distinct music, fashion, and a spirit of rebellion, all of which are captured in “The Drowsy Chaperone.” For U.S. audiences, the show offers a nostalgic look at a pivotal time in American history, while also providing a comedic and heartwarming story.
