A Month-Long celebration of Electric Vehicles

Drive Electric Earth Month, an expansion of the annual Drive Electric Week, features meetups and events throughout April. The initiative, organized by plug In America, the Sierra Club, the Electric Vehicle Association, EV Hybrid Noire, and Drive Electric USA, aims to provide opportunities for the public to learn about EVs and connect with current owners.

Events range from community celebrations and “EV Ride & Drives,” offering test drives of multiple EVs in one location, to informal gatherings where potential buyers can engage with EV owners and ask questions. according to organizers, these events provide a space to discuss the realities of EV ownership “away from the pressure of a dealership.”

Nationwide Participation

This year, there are 158 registered events across the U.S., plus one in Mexico. These events have been ongoing throughout April, with a high concentration occurring around Earth Day on April 22, and continuing through the final weekend of the month.

Plug In America is highlighting events in smaller communities,providing opportunities for EV education and engagement beyond major metropolitan areas.

Spotlight on Local Events

Here’s a look at some of the Drive Electric Earth Month events taking place across the country:

• Waimea, HI (April 26): The Big Island EV – Cruise and Picnic event brought together EV drivers from various parts of the Big Island. participants convened in locations like Kona, Waimea, Waikoloa, and Hilo before driving to the Gil Kahele Recreation Area on Mauna Kea for a potluck. The event fostered discussions about the unique experience of owning EVs in Hawaii.
• Santa Barbara, CA (April 26-27): As part of Santa Barbara’s Earth Day celebration, the Green Car Show featured ride & drives and an “Owners Corner” where EV owners showcased their vehicles and answered questions from attendees
  
  

  Drive Electric Earth Month: An interview with EV Advocacy Leader Anya Sharma

  As part of our coverage of Drive Electric Earth Month, Archyde News had the pleasure of speaking with Anya Sharma, a leading advocate for electric vehicle adoption. Anya is the Director of Community Outreach for the Electric Vehicle Association and has been instrumental in organizing and promoting EV initiatives nationwide.

  The Interview

  archyde News: Anya, thank you for joining us. Drive Electric earth Month has seen a surge in events this year. What do you think is driving this increased participation?

  Anya Sharma: Thanks for having me! The growth is definitely exciting. I think several factors are at play. first,the increasing availability of EV models across different price points makes them more accessible. Second, there’s a growing understanding of the environmental and economic benefits of evs.events like these create a vital community where people can see, touch, and experience the technology firsthand, demystifying the transition to EVs.

  Archyde News: The events, especially the “Ride & Drives,” seem very important. How do these test drive events influence potential EV buyers?

  Anya Sharma: Absolutely crucial. Manny people have preconceptions about EVs – range anxiety, charging concerns – that vanish once they sit behind the wheel. These ride-and-drive events provide a safe space for people to get their hands on EVs. Most people are surprised with how convenient and fun they are. The owners corner is also really useful, as they can meet current owners with real-world insights, that is the single strongest way to convert potential buyers into new EV drivers.

  Archyde News: Drive Electric Earth Month is also highlighting events in smaller communities. Why is this focus so important?

  Anya Sharma: The shift to EVs shouldn’t be limited to major cities. Small communities often have unique needs and concerns – distance to charging stations, local energy costs etc.By bringing events and education to these areas, we ensure that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the EV revolution and can ask their unique questions.

  Archyde News: Considering the diverse locations of events, from Hawaii to California, what are some of the unique challenges and opportunities for EV adoption in these varied environments?

  Anya Sharma: The Big Island for example has a lot of solar power and a network of people excited to use it, on the downside, it requires adapting to the unique terrain. the opportunities that are given to create a more lasting surroundings are immense. Also, the costs of gasoline based cars on the islands are much higher because of the cost to ship and deliver the fuel whereas EVs offer an attractive choice. In California,there are issues with range and there are more incentives available,which boosts the use of evs. each location requires tailored solutions. These events are a good first step.

  Archyde News: How critically important is government and private collaboration in the promotion of evs?

  Anya Sharma: Absolutely important, you need to have both sides working together, whether it is indeed tax credits, or installing more charging stations, these actions create the perfect environment for people to invest in EVs. The government can establish policies to accelerate the adoption of EVs,and the private companies can manufacture the EVs. A strong partnership will always guarantee success.

  Archyde News: Looking ahead, what is the most significant hurdle to widespread EV adoption and how can it be overcome?

  Anya Sharma: “I beleive it is indeed the availability of charging infrastructure. Although the charging infrastructure is expanding exponentially, the lack of access remains a major concern. Investing in deploying charging stations is the most critically important hurdle that can be overcome, in conjunction with policies and incentives to encourage their installation in private and public spaces. It will increase range. Moreover, greater public awareness is critical. We need to continue to educate people on the benefits and dispell the false perceptions.”

  Archyde News: Anya, do you have any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

  Anya Sharma: Yes! I strongly encourage everyone to explore the world of EVs. Drive Electric Earth Month provides a great starting point.
