In July, five-star cornerback DJ Pickett from Zephyrhills, Florida, made a significant announcement by committing to the LSU Tigers after an intense recruitment process that saw him weigh offers from many of the nation’s elite college football programs.
Pickett, who stands as the top-ranked defensive back in the United States, ultimately chose the Tigers over formidable competitors such as Miami, Oregon, and Georgia.
As the Early Signing Period approaches, LSU remains steadfast in its belief in Pickett, even though rival teams are attempting to sway his decision in these final moments.
“It’s about my son being happy, my son being comfortable and my son getting on the field earlier, and we feel that spot is LSU,” expressed Pickett’s father, Damien, when speaking with On3 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.
Fast forwarding to the previous weekend, Pickett took the opportunity to visit another prominent SEC program: The Georgia Bulldogs.
He made a notable trip to Athens to witness the Bulldogs’ thrilling prime-time matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers, a game in which Georgia emerged victorious.
The electrifying atmosphere of Sanford Stadium has certainly piqued Pickett’s interest, and as the Early Signing Period draws near, LSU remains hopeful of retaining his commitment.
Following the surprising news of highly touted quarterback Bryce Underwood shifting his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines, many recognized LSU’s precarious situation in the current recruiting landscape.
“If you are a DB, and Coach Raymond is at LSU, I feel that’s the right place to be,” Pickett declared after announcing his decision, emphasizing the strong appeal of cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond.
Pickett wrapped up his senior season with remarkable achievements, making a name for himself that will be remembered in the Sunshine State’s record books.
“I’m the leading all-time receiver for our county (Pasco), so I’m proud of that,” Pickett reflected. “I want people to remember what I do off the field. But on the field, how I took pride at playing at my school.”
“There’s bumps and bruises right now, but we’re staying strong,” Pickett asserted when discussing LSU’s program, while also confirming his attendance at the upcoming matchup against Oklahoma next week.
Expressing his versatility, he stated, “I play both sides, I make plays on defense and make plays on offense,” while indicating he would primarily focus on cornerback during his time at LSU.
Once Corey Raymond was reinstated to the LSU coaching staff, Pickett’s commitment became even more apparent, highlighting the influence of Raymond in LSU’s iconic status as “DBU.”
The fight for Pickett’s signature promises to be intense right up until the Early Signing Period in December, signaling LSU’s continuing push in the evolving world of college football recruiting.

**DJ Pickett:** Thanks for having me! What really drew me to LSU was the coaching staff, especially Coach Corey Raymond. If you’re a defensive back, it’s hard to ignore the success that his players have had in college and the NFL. I feel like I can grow under his guidance.
**Interviewer:** You recently visited Georgia for their game against Tennessee. How did that experience affect your commitment to LSU?
**DJ Pickett:** The atmosphere at Sanford Stadium was unreal! It was a great game, and seeing that kind of excitement definitely piqued my interest a bit. But at the end of the day, I’m focused on what LSU offers me and the potential for early playing time. That’s really important to me.
**Interviewer:** There have been some recent shifts in the recruiting landscape, especially with Bryce Underwood’s commitment to Michigan. How do you feel about the current competition for DBs at LSU?
**DJ Pickett:** It’s definitely competitive out there, but I believe LSU has a solid plan in place. I want to be part of a program where I can make an immediate impact. The situation may seem precarious for some, but I believe in what LSU is building.
**Interviewer:** Your father mentioned the importance of your comfort and happiness in your decision-making. How much influence did he have on your commitment?
**DJ Pickett:** My dad has been my biggest supporter throughout this process. He knows me better than anyone, and we have always talked about what’s best for my future. Having him by my side made the decision much more reassuring.
**Interviewer:** As you wrap up your senior season and reflect on your accomplishments, what’s your proudest moment on the field?
**DJ Pickett:** I’m proud to be the leading all-time receiver for my county (Pasco). That’s something I’ll carry with me forever. I want people to remember the hard work I put in—not just my stats, but my dedication to my school and my community.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, with the Early Signing Period approaching, what are your thoughts on how you’re feeling about LSU?
**DJ Pickett:** I’m excited! There are always bumps and bruises, but I’m committed and looking forward to what’s ahead. I’ll be at the upcoming game against Oklahoma, and it’s moments like those that remind me why I chose LSU.
