CINCINNATI – Abby Walker, an outstanding player on the University of Cincinnati women’s volleyball team, has earned the exciting distinction of being selected by the Columbus Fury during the 2024 PVF Collegiate Draft held on Monday. Her remarkable journey led her to be chosen in the fourth round as the 32nd overall selection, a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.
“What an amazing accomplishment for Abby,” expressed head coach Molly Alvey with evident pride. “She is so deserving of this opportunity, and I have a hunch she will be playing the game of volleyball for quite a bit longer. Abby is one of the hardest working players I have ever coached. Even better, she is also so appreciative of the opportunity she has been given at UC. Columbus is getting a gem of an athlete and a gem of a person. I am just overjoyed for Abby and her family. She deserves this and so much more.”
Throughout her impressive collegiate career, Walker has amassed a total of 1,014 kills, 347 blocks, 272 digs, and 100 aces. As a senior star on her team, she has demonstrated exceptional skill by leading the Bearcats in blocks across 19 matches, with an impressive five or more blocks in eight of those contests. Notably, she ranks 10th in the Big 12 Conference in both blocks per set at 1.07 and hitting percentage, showcasing her well-rounded abilities with an impressive .340.
Walker is now joining a prestigious roster of former Bearcats who have made significant strides in the professional volleyball arena. This growing list includes standout athletes like Jordan Thompson, who is set to play for LOVB Houston Volleyball this winter, and Elissa Alcantara, who currently showcases her talents with Volley Bergamo in the renowned Italian Women’s Volleyball League.
“Abby is a steal in the draft,” remarked Fury’s Head Coach Angel Perez enthusiastically. “We were looking for a middle that could move side-to-side quickly, and Abby fits the mode perfectly. We’re also excited to have another native of (Cambridge) Ohio on our roster.”
As Walker prepares to conclude her remarkable Bearcat career this weekend, she will participate in two final matches in the Red & Black. The Bearcats are set to host No. 16 Baylor at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by a matchup against No. 22 TCU at 2 p.m. on Friday, which marks the special occasion of Senior Day.
