April 11, 2025
st. Louis,MO – The Boston University Terriers are heading to the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship game after a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions at the Enterprise Center. BU’s triumph marks their first championship game appearance in recent years, continuing a dominant season under coach Jay Pandolfo.
Terriers’ Dominance Continues
Head Coach Jay Pandolfo has built something special at Boston University. In just three seasons, he’s led the Terriers to three Frozen Four appearances, secured a Beanpot title, and clinched a Hockey East championship. Now, they stand one win away from their sixth national title. Their path to the final has been paved with remarkable wins, as they’ve won eight of their last nine games, with their only recent loss to UConn in the Hockey East semifinal.
Last year, the terriers were agonizingly close to the final, losing to eventual champion Denver in overtime. This year, they’ve overcome that hurdle, fueled by a potent offense and solid goaltending. Their opponent in the final will be Western Michigan, a team that boasts an even more impressive nine-game winning streak.
Game Recap: BU vs. Penn State
Boston University’s Mikhail Yegorov made 32 saves on 33 shots to backstop Terriers to the national title game.
the Terriers mirrored Western Michigan’s semifinal experience, carrying a 2-0 lead into the third period. Unlike their future opponent, BU managed to maintain their advantage, conceding only one goal. Senior forward Jack Hughes, a Los Angeles kings draft pick, initiated the scoring with a crucial goal:

Penn State mounted a comeback effort in the third period, with Nic DeGraves scoring early in the frame. However, Jack Harvey, a Tampa Bay Lightning prospect, sealed the victory for BU with an empty-net goal.
“It almost doesn’t feel quite real,” Hughes said, reflecting on the victory. “It’s a little bit of a relief for now, and then we’re going to get back to work and hopefully win it all.”
Cole Hutson: The “Big Game” Player
Cole Hutson’s impact on the Terriers’ success cannot be overstated. his performance in crucial games has earned him the moniker “Big Game Cole hutson.” A Capitals’ second-rounder, Hutson has consistently delivered game-changing plays, including two points in the World Juniors gold medal game, a goal in the Beanpot final, and a dominant performance in the regional semifinal. His assist in the national semifinal further solidified his reputation as a clutch player.
This season, Hutson has amassed 47 points in 38 games, closely mirroring his brother lane’s impressive 48 points in 39 games. Hutson’s all-around game has been notably impressive, excelling both offensively and defensively. His ability to carry the puck out of trouble, set up scoring opportunities, and block shots showcases his potential as an impactful NHL defenseman.
“Whenever No.44 has the puck, I’m always expecting to get it,” Eiserman said about Hutson’s assist on his goal. “He’s such a great player, and with him he was just looking for the angle. It was a late pass but a great play.”
Mikhail Yegorov’s Remarkable turnaround
Goaltender Mikhail Yegorov’s journey to the national championship game is nothing short of a fairy tale. After a challenging start to the season with the omaha Lancers, where he lost 13 consecutive games, Yegorov made the decision to join BU mid-season. Since then, the Devils’ second-round pick has been a revelation, backstopping the Terriers to the Beanpot title and now the national championship game.
Since his first start on January 25th, Yegorov has maintained a save percentage above .930 in 17 games. His 6-foot-5 frame and athleticism make him a formidable presence in net. With further progress in the gym, Yegorov has the potential to become a top-tier NHL goaltender.
“It has been great coming here and getting a chance to play and sticking thru the whole season. (My teammates) have treated me as if I was a part of their team for four years,” Yegorov said, reflecting on his whirlwind season. “Now we’re going to play in the national championship and it’s kind of amazing.”
Penn State’s Historic Run Ends
Despite a valiant effort, Penn State’s Cinderella run came to an end against the Terriers. After a slow start to their Big Ten campaign, the Nittany Lions rallied to reach their first-ever Frozen Four. Although they mounted a comeback attempt in the third period, their early deficit proved too much to overcome against BU’s potent offense.
“It’s always tough when the season ends, but honestly I can’t just help but feel, well, grateful is one and positive about this year and this team,” Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky said.“We were left for dead not long ago, and for these guys to come back and play in St.Louis is remarkable. And better than that is how they did it. I learned a lesson from them this year: The way they stuck together and stayed positive in the hardest times when it would have been really easy not to is really, really positive.”

Coach Miller has followed the Boston University Terriers and the NCAA ice hockey landscape closely this season and offers unique insights into their astounding journey to the National Championship game.
Archyde: Coach Miller, congratulations on being here. Boston University’s performance has been outstanding. What, in your expert opinion, has been the key to their success this season, especially in their recent win over Penn State?
Coach Miller: Thank you for having me. Boston University’s success is a combination of factors. Jay Pandolfo’s coaching is clearly top-tier, fostering a team-first mentality. But what stands out is their offensive firepower, spearheaded by players like Jack Hughes and Cole eiserman, coupled with the rock-solid goaltending of Mikhail Yegorov. Against Penn State, their ability to convert on opportunities, combined with Yegorov’s steadiness in net, proved crucial. They capitalized on key moments, and that’s what championship teams do.
Archyde: Cole Hutson has earned the “big Game” moniker. How significant is his contribution, and what makes him such a pivotal player for BU?
Coach Miller: Cole Hutson is a game-changer. His ability to read plays, move the puck, and make clutch decisions is remarkable. He elevates the play of everyone around him. his assist on Eiserman’s goal in the Penn State game is a perfect example of his vision and skill. He has the poise of a seasoned veteran, making him indispensable to BU’s success as they chase the national title.
Archyde: Mikhail Yegorov’s mid-season arrival has been transformative. How did he solidify the team on goal, and what potential do you see for him at the professional level?
Coach Miller: Yegorov’s arrival was a turning point. Coming in mid-season can be challenging, but he quickly adapted thanks to his athleticism and size. His reflexes and ability to track the puck have made him a reliable presence in net. I was really impressed that he did it mid-season considering the team was pretty much already formed. With continued growth, especially in terms of refining his technique, he has the potential to develop into a top-tier NHL goaltender. The Devils have a gem there.
Archyde: Penn State had a remarkable run to the Frozen Four. What can we learn from their performance?
Coach Miller: Penn State’s story is one of resilience and teamwork. Despite the loss, their ability to come together, especially after a tough start, shows the importance of a positive attitude and great coaching. They showed that anything is absolutely possible with the right combination of determination, skill, and coaching strategy.Their run also highlights the growing competitiveness of the Big Ten.
Archyde: Looking ahead to the championship game against Western Michigan, who do you see as the key matchups and which is the most critically importent factor that will decide the National Championship?
Coach Miller: The matchup between BU’s offense and Western Michigan’s defence will be interesting. If BU’s top players can make plays and Yegorov can stand tall again, I give BU the advantage. Western Michigan has a potent offense of their own with an amazing winning streak, though, BU is on a mission and has some amazing players that will need stopping for a national championship. I think the goaltenders will be the X factor. The team that gets the better goaltending performance will have the edge. But the most important factor is their ability to stay disciplined and avoid penalties, which can swing a game in such a high-stakes environment.
Archyde: For the casual fan, what’s one key thing to watch for in the championship game that might not be instantly obvious?
Coach Miller: Keep an eye on the special teams – power plays and penalty kills. They become even more critical in championship games.A timely goal on the power play or a strong penalty kill can be a game-changer. It frequently enough comes down to one or two crucial moments.
Archyde: Coach, what’s your prediction for the National Championship game, and why?
Coach Miller: It’s going to be a tight, thrilling contest. I’m leaning toward Boston university, 4-3. Their offensive depth, Hutson’s playmaking ability, and Yegorov’s goaltending give them a slight edge. But Western Michigan is a formidable opponent. it’s going to be a great game.
Archyde: Coach Miller, thank you so much for these excellent insights. Is there anything else you want to share with our readers?
