Bohdan Tůma: As a king of Czech dubbing I do not feel

His voice speaks world film stars and characters from ads. Bohdan Tůma is one of the most prominent faces of Czech dubbing, but has also played in a number of Czech films and series. How does he recall his first role, the worst dubbing, how many films he has wrapped and what was the meeting with dubbing demigods? It was not only that he revealed Milos Pokorný in the Boomer Talk podcast.

The speech of Bohdan Tůma is very specific, so we recommend that you listen to the interview in an unabloated audio version.

Do you feel the king of Czech dubbing?

To tell the truth, as the king of Czech dubbing, I do not feel, they say it around me and they play that I am a king. It is the same as at the theater where the king will never be a king of himself, the colleagues around. Some do not like me, but it is in every job, we have our sympathizers and soul mates, as well as opponents and antisympars. The fact that you have already achieved something in the dubbing is the František Filipovský Award, which is awarded every year in Přelouč. I just have to say that I was currently sent to the hedgehog of Sonica 3 to the narrower selection, so we will see how it will turn out.

After those years, I think, it could come out.

I guess I’ll get it in memoriam. Or for a lifelong work.

You are not only a duber, but you also say spots, ads and the like. Do you have a framework idea how many times did you go to the microphone?

About a year ago, someone told me that the dubbing forum, which is a servant where big fans write different posts, is a list of doubted titles. At that time, I asked my younger daughters to see how many of the title was there, and I guess it was almost 15,000 pieces.

The volume is respectable.

A colleague in second place is about half.

Do you remember your first dubbing?

I have said it several times, it was really funny, now with hindsight. I was about fifteen, it was for mosquitoes and it was a film dubbing of the Romanian film about the miners. I can no longer remember the name, but there were three miners – one old, one older and one young. And I was the young one. Shot, large loop, screen, just film dubbing. The stone is rolling, the first miner climbs, grinding from the soot, I guess Mr. Rudolf Hrušínský was spoken and said something in the sense of “UF, so we survived.” Now the other is crawling, it was Mr. Zábajský and says “but it was a chore,” and the third young climbs behind them and just breathes and otherwise says nothing. It was for the first time, they said it, and as in the corner of the corner, he stood quietly not to disturb these masters, these dubbing shoes. And when we did it for the third time and the loop ended, the director Wallo said and said, “When will Mr. Tůma work?” And I have no text there. “And did you look at the picture, young men?” I did not notice that the young man climbed behind them with the burner, the flame was blowing, so in my first dubbing I blinked the flame on the burner in the Romanian film about the miners.

And with such dubbed legends.

Speaking of those legends, I saw at work Even Mr. Filipovsky, as the film gendarme and gendarme dubbed, because my dad had friends of dubbed, who went to the wine bar on two white, so they took me there. He was Mr. Zdenda Blažek and Mr. Milan Mach. They told me to sit there quietly, watch and listen. And now Master Filipovský, a small growth, stood up to the microphone and began to pour it. And he didn’t do it anyway, it went about three times, he looked at it once, he was looking for everything else, rejoicing, dosing, I don’t know what sound he could still do. At that time I just knew that they always had to choose the best loop, and then it was gradually cut one after another. The director had to be completely finished because every loop was perfect.

Have you ever had dubbing that you almost couldn’t survive, really terrible?

These are mostly soap operas. Now, in addition, Turkish soap operas have started, which are even worse than the South American ones. And as Turkey is mostly in Asia, they have a completely different view of problem solving. There are all who are rich, criminals are harmful to another rich family, which are also criminals, and steal women among themselves.

Certainly you will remember something you really did with love?

And was I angry that it ended? Well, that’s Denzel Washington, that’s Mr. Player. Recently Equalizer, three parts, or gladiator two. Gladiator is a spectacle that we will tell, Ridley Scott, that he is so many years old, is a genius. And that Denzel plays there quite amazing. In the end, he turns out to be the biggest shit, but his revenge can be understood, because when he was small, they murdered his family. Just such a pearl, I directed the Czech version of number one. You don’t know that, because you don’t know the final subtitles.

I think the worst dubbing quality was in the nineties. This was the fact stuck with a hot needle and sewn on the knee. But at that time I was incredibly learned, trained observation, intonation, listen to the other, hear the original, actually make plagiarism into the Czech.

Bohdan Tůma

So I’ll have number one for you.

Well, when we did number one in 2000, Emperor Petr Haničinec spoke. Then we made the second version of the so -called director’s cut, it was longer and unfortunately Peter was no longer between us and the character was fantastically spoken by Bohumil Švarc. And even such a parallel between number one and two – there are three figures that could have intervened in parallel from the number one. He is a young Lucius who, as a ten -year -old, Vojta Kotek spoke there, but he has so much work that we unfortunately did not agree. Lucilla was Simonka Postlerová. And Karel Richter was doing Dereka Jacobi, the senator. Unfortunately, Simonka and Karel are no longer among us.

I love the movie, moreover, they often confuse us with Russell Crow.

There is a certain form, perhaps from behind. By the way, I invented Jirka Schwarz as his voice. And also that Daniel’s child is guilty.

Do you know as soon as you see a dubbed movie or a series that it’s a smit?

Like it is not well done? I think it will know the layman. And you know why it is happening? Because many of those in the quotation marks of top beats are cooked and bare dubbing is sent beyond the ocean, at best to England, where they mix in special big halls. And there just a dude can make a mistake, maybe he swaps the tracks.

It is often said that the dubbing is no longer as good as it used to be that there is no time for it, etc.

That’s nonsense, it’s still good. The time has accelerated, but The programs help us incredibly. I think the worst dubbing quality was in the nineties. This was the fact stuck with a hot needle and sewn on the knee. But at that time I was incredibly learned, trained observation, intonation, listen to the other, hear the original, actually make plagiarism into the Czech. That I should say it in the Czech version with the same intensity and in the same feeling. And this is what I learned and I think that we were free from the high -ranking and it started to get better, new televisions have already taken care of higher quality.

Currently there is the second extreme, when you find such a computer write of voice from America, we call it humps, and they want it to be the same in the Czech version to fit the original, but how many times it is not because We have such things as vocals, retains and the like, and if I end up with a vocal and he has there at the end of the ret On the end, I will be optically short. So I still say “don’t look at the humps, look at the picture, it fits in the picture”. Such a fight with windmills.

Is there a big difference when you dub yourself, and when you’re on the other side as a director?

It’s about how you are able to radiate the director’s fluid, that you are a director here, that we are not friends or on the same level as we are going to dub together. No, I know the most about it and I want it like that. And if they don’t like it, take it and go home. I want it like this because I know why.

Let’s go to AI. A lot of people are afraid for various reasons. Do you think it really can take a job?

It is already taking the job. Artificial intelligence, for example, makes audio books, but it’s still heard, it’s not completely cunning. It will certainly take a job and even heard that the artificial intelligence will take the voice of an original actor and normally transform it into German or French.

Bohdan, do you feel like boomer?

I admit that I don’t know what it is at all.

You’re not the only one. Boomer is someone for the young generation who has already had it so -called, but is taken leniently. Did your children indicate that you have already missed the train?

Sure, my daughters already know that I have all the things of this type totally on the hook. Until recently, I couldn’t even read a mail, let alone write and send it. My new iPhone is rolling at home and I’m just at Samsung, but I have to go to it. And I want. Jesus Maria, but why? I’d rather go hockey, football, look at Sparta, go to the countryside, go sitting on sitting. But mostly in the forest I sit alone, how many times the animals go there, and I don’t even know that she passed because I snore. Sometimes I like myself at home and watch on TV, what I want, because when I come home, they want to watch the street. That makes me hair completely. For when I look at it and see the performances there, I do not want to say acting, because they are not, so I am ashamed of them. And I don’t want to have this feeling. And I used to have it in the theater. By the way, at the cottage I like myself with my two dogs.

When you were a young boy, did you care about how dressed or if you have a western shirt?

At the conservatory, when someone came in the Benetton T -shirt, everyone just drool and my grandmother forced me to walk in Tesil’s pants. I was so ashamed. Or at home hand -knit sweaters. My grandmother from the mom’s side was a purebred Austrian and sometimes they were given permission to come to the Czech Republic and brought Manner biscuits, after which I could beat myself. Or they brought a ketchup from Meinl. It was Mana, I didn’t want to share with anyone. Or they brought me the Adidas T -shirt. But that was really very rare.

Bohdane, what is new to you now about work?

To tell the truth, I can’t actually talk about the new job. Nor to indicate. We are preparing a new film with Jack Black. He will have a premiere in a moment.

How about any documents, do you enjoy?

Very. I love war, historical or nature, but I do not do so much, but if I already, I enjoy it – “and now, dear viewers, we will watch for ten minutes at how zebras mate”.

Is there anything you fundamentally avoid?

I really tie my hands in my fist when I come somewhere and someone wants me to say something like Alzak or Jim Carrey. I don’t like it, the exception is when it’s for a friend or for young children.

Do you feel Beverly Hills 90210 as your dubbing start?

Exactly, it was in the nineties my springboard to the dubbing business. But I speak Brandon Walsh only since the second series. I even remember my very first main role, it was in the film Sweet 18. Interestingly, it was that it was about a grandfather who was an incredible skip and a whore and had a grandson who was a terribly cut off. The grandfather tried to train him all the time and he couldn’t. And the grandfather died, and the ghost of the grandfather entered the young and became a smoke. I was twenty years old.
