Thailand Welcomes Batik Air Malaysia’s New Route Strengthening Tourism Ties
Thailand is celebrating the launch of Batik Air Malaysia’s new route connecting Bangkok and Johor Bahru, further strengthening the interconnected tourism bond between Thailand and Malaysia.
This exciting development boosts travel options for visitors and supports the robust tourism sector in both countries. The direct flights promise to attract more travelers, bolster regional tourism and further enrich cultural exchange between the two nations.
The inaugural flight was met with traditional Thai hospitality, with guests warmly welcomed by key representatives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thai Lion Air, Batik Air Malaysia, and Don Mueang International Airport.
"We are thrilled to welcome Batik Air Malaysia’s Bangkok-Johor Bahru route, further strengthening ties between our nations," said Ms. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and South Pacific.
"Malaysia consistently contributes high visitor numbers, making it one of our key markets."
" This new route significantly enhances connectivity, offering greater convenience for Malaysian travelers, many of whom enjoy spontaneous trips to Thailand. We are confident it will drive continued growth and enrich travel experiences.” she added.
The new daily service, operated by Batik Air Malaysia, is represented by Thai Lion Air and part of the Lion Group.
Growing Popularity of Thailand for Malaysian Travelers
Thailand remains incredibly popular with Malaysian travelers attracting over 4.6 million visitors in 2023 alone. Data from the TAT highlights Malaysia as a key inbound market with over 4.1 million arrivals recorded as of October 2024. Projections indicate 2024 will be another record-breaking year.
Factors such as proximity, affordability, and Thailand’s rich tapestry of attractions—including world-class cuisine, stunning natural landscapes, luxurious accommodations, and vibrant shopping scenes—make it a favorite destination for Malaysian tourists.
Key Thai destinations for Malaysian travelers include Songkhla, Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai.
Growing interest is also emerging for the islands of Phang- Nga and Surat Thani. The relaxation of the TM6 immigration form at the Sadao border (in place since November 2023 and extended until April 2025), has further encouraged spontaneous visits.
Strong Connectivity Fosters Tourism
Thailand’s nine permanent land borders with Malaysia – serviced by checkpoints like Sadao (Songkhla) and Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah) – play a crucial role in facilitating this ease of travel.
Over 1.5 million Malaysians entered Thailand via Sadao in 2023, averaging 3,855 daily arrivals. The TM6 waiver, implemented in November 2023, has significantly boosted arrivals, with daily averages rising to 5,611 during peak season.
Air connectivity is also thriving. In 2023, flight operations reached 77% of pre-pandemic levels. Now, impressive growth for 2024 is projected at 83.59%, reflecting the 13,884 flights expected this year. This surge is further bolsterered by new routes like AirAsia’s Kuala Lumpur-Pattaya and Malaysia Airlines’ Kuala Lumpur to Chiang Mai.
Popular Thailand routes like those to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Hat Yai remain heavily trafficked, signaling continued growth and a strong interdependent travel relationship.
