ISELIN, NJ, Nov. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A team of scientists from BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) and Heesung Catalysts Corporation (HCC) was recently awarded the 2024 Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development of New Jersey for its innovative Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology for fuel-cutting NOx control in gasoline vehicles. The technology treats NOx well under modern engine operating conditions and provides lower tailpipe emissions compared to conventional three-way conversion catalysts.
The team consisted of scientists Xiaolai Zheng and Pat Burk (retired) from ECMS, along with scientists Jinwoo Song and Jun Lee from HCC.
“By integrating a NOx trap functionality into a TWC catalyst, the new TWC-NT technology substantially reduces tailpipe emissions of NOx and other toxic species,” said Xiaolai Zheng, principal scientist at New Automotive Catalyst Technologies at ECMS.
“As a benefit, automakers can calibrate gasoline-powered passenger vehicles with more frequent fuel cuts for better fuel economy, which also means lower CO2 emissions during vehicle operation,” said Jinwoo Song, Vice President and Head of RD&A, HCC.
“This technology has been well received by our customers as it meets an essential market need,” said Saeed Alerasool, Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Applications at ECMS. “We are fortunate to have the best technical minds in the industry working to help our customers meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and achieve high fuel efficiency. This award is a testament to their hard work and daily dedication to innovation. We are very proud of them.”
The New Jersey Research and Development Council created the awards to honor the legacy of Thomas Edison and use his name to honor New Jersey inventors and research organizations that drive innovation and continue to position New Jersey as a global hub for innovation. This award is part of the Council’s mission to collaborate with industry, academia and government to expand and strengthen STEM in education, innovation and the economy.

How does the Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology developed by BASF enhance the efficiency of modern automotive engines while reducing harmful emissions?
**Interview with Xiaolai Zheng, Principal Scientist at BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Xiaolai. Congratulations on your team receiving the 2024 Edison Patent Award for your innovative NOx trap technology. Can you start by explaining what this technology entails?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Thank you! The Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology we developed integrates NOx trapping functionality into a traditional three-way catalyst. This innovative approach allows us to treat nitrogen oxides more effectively under modern engine conditions, significantly reducing tailpipe emissions compared to conventional systems.
**Interviewer:** That sounds impressive. Why is reducing NOx emissions so crucial for the automotive industry today?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Nitrogen oxides are harmful pollutants that contribute to smog formation and have serious health impacts. With governments worldwide tightening emissions regulations, automakers need new technologies that can meet these standards while also improving fuel efficiency. Our technology offers a solution that addresses both of these critical needs.
**Interviewer:** Can you share how this technology impacts fuel economy and CO2 emissions?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Absolutely. By enabling more frequent fuel cuts during operation, our TWC-NT technology enhances fuel economy in gasoline-powered vehicles. This not only conserves fuel but also leads to lower CO2 emissions during vehicle operation, contributing to a more sustainable automotive industry.
**Interviewer:** The collaboration with Heesung Catalysts Corporation seems vital to this success. How has working together enriched the development of this technology?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Collaboration is key in innovation. Working with our talented colleagues from Heesung, like Jinwoo Song and Jun Lee, allowed us to combine our expertise in catalysis with their knowledge of materials technology. This partnership fostered creative solutions and led to significant advancements in our technology, ultimately benefiting our customers.
