pickleball, the sport known for its short nets, small paddles, and growing popularity,is attracting serious investment. Atlanta-based startup Pickleheads, an online platform connecting pickleball enthusiasts with courts and games, recently secured $2.5 million in funding to fuel its expansion.
A Pandemic-Fueled Boom
The surge in pickleball’s popularity began during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people sought safe and socially distanced outdoor activities. In 2019, 3.5 million Americans had played pickleball at least once, according to Statista. By 2023, that number had nearly quadrupled to 13.6 million.
“Pickleball was kind of the perfect way to get outdoors, get some exercise, socialize responsibly, and it became a real pandemic phenomenon,” said Brandon Mackie, chief operating officer and co-founder of Pickleheads. “But what was interesting is, you know, unlike bread making and some of these other things that sort of went away once the pandemic ran its course, pickleball didn’t stop. People got exposed to it during that time, but they kept going.”
Connecting Players and Courts
Pickleheads aims to capitalize on this growth by providing a comprehensive platform for pickleball players. Users can find nearby courts, join games based on skill level, and even connect with private instructors to improve thier game. The platform is also the official court and game finder for USA Pickleball, the sport’s governing body.
building the Pickleball Ecosystem
Mackie envisions Pickleheads becoming the central hub for the pickleball community, allowing instructors and entrepreneurs to manage their entire business on the platform. “Our goal is to become far and away the number one pickleball app on the planet,” Mackie stated.
The recent funding round will be used to expand Pickleheads’ marketing and engineering teams, with a focus on hiring talent in Atlanta. This investment signals a strong belief in pickleball’s continued growth and Pickleheads’ potential to become a dominant force in the industry.

Q: The pickup of pickleball during the pandemic is unprecedented. What do you see as the driving factors behind this popularity surge?
“Firstly, it’s such a social and accessible sport. Anyone can pick up a paddle and hit the court. Secondly, during the pandemic, people were looking for outdoor activities that didn’t require close contact. And let’s not forget, pickleball is just plain fun! It’s competitive but not to intense, allowing players to socialize while playing. It’s no surprise that once people started, they kept going.”
Q: Pickleheads has positioned itself as a game-changer in the pickleball community. Can you walk us through how the platform connects players and courts?
“Absolutely. We’ve built a comprehensive platform were players can find nearby courts, join games based on their skill level, and even connect with private instructors. We also partnered with USA Pickleball to become their official court and game finder. At Pickleheads, we aim to create a central hub that brings the entire pickleball community together.”

“With this funding, we’ll be expanding our marketing and engineering teams, focusing on hiring talent locally in Atlanta. We’re dedicated to making Pickleheads the go-to app for pickleball enthusiasts worldwide. Our vision is for Pickleheads to become the central platform where pickleball instructors and entrepreneurs manage their entire businesses, fostering a thriving ecosystem around the sport.”
Q: Looking ahead,do you see any challenges or opportunities on the horizon for pickleball and Pickleheads?
“One challenge is ensuring the sport remains accessible and inclusive as it grows. We’re committed to supporting initiatives that bring pickleball to underserved communities. As for opportunities, we see immense potential in growing the sport internationally. We’re also excited about the possibility of live streaming pickleball matches and creating more engaging content for our users.”
