Alan Ritchson talks getting naked in ‘Reacher’ season 3, episode 3

Reacher Season 3 Features a Daring Escape Sequence

In the electrifying third episode of Reacher season 3, “Number 2 with a Bullet,” DEA agent Susan Duffy (Sonya Cassidy) is left speechless by the sight of Alan Ritchson’s titular character emerging from the woods, naked adn soaking wet, in the dead of night. “F— me,” she exclaims, highlighting the sheer audaciousness of Reacher’s situation.

However, while Duffy remains in the dark about the events leading up to this dramatic entrance, viewers witness Reacher’s harrowing journey. Working undercover within a formidable criminal association to bring down his nemesis, Francis Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee), Reacher finds himself trapped within a heavily guarded house with no way out without being detected.

With the main gate under constant surveillance by a formidable guard, Reacher’s only option is to make a daring escape through the backyard and navigate treacherous waters to rendezvous with Duffy miles away. This action-packed sequence sees Reacher scaling massive rocks, stripping down to his underwear, and diving into the cold ocean with his signature stoic determination.

While the scene appears effortless on screen, bringing it to life was a notable challenge for both Ritchson and the production team. As Ritchson shares, “It was tough. That water work was pretty tricky, and stripping down and crawling across those cold, wet rocks naked was not the funnest for me and for just about anybody watching — but we did it because we love the show.”

The scene, inspired by Lee Child’s novel Persuader, involved the construction of an elaborate water world within a giant indoor pool complete with a wave machine. It was so remarkable that even seasoned professionals from high-budget productions like Aquaman expressed their awe at the scale and detail.

Interestingly, Ritchson found the experience to be somewhat nostalgic. His first significant television role was playing Aquaman on Smallville, and filming this sequence brought back memories of working in frigid waters during his time on that show. “it was pretty similar,” he recollects. “Because the water was cold, and when I was a child on Smallville, we were in a glacial lake. It was just above freezing, and it felt a little bit like that up in Toronto shooting again. So I was having flashbacks — it’s like my ‘Nam.”

Reacher season 3 continues to deliver thrilling action and captivating storytelling, showcasing the resilience and unwavering determination of its titular hero. New episodes are released every thursday on Prime Video.
