Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff and the first Latin American pope, marked a significant milestone on March 13,2025: the 12th anniversary of his election. however, this year’s party was unlike any other in modern church history. For the first time, the Pope observed the anniversary from his hospital bed at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he is recovering from a lung infection.

Medical Updates and Anniversary Activities
Despite his hospitalization since Feb. 14 due to a complex lung infection, the Pope received positive medical news. A recent chest X-ray confirmed improvements in his condition, following initial concerns that placed him in “no…imminent danger of death.” While no specific medical updates where released on his anniversary, sources indicate his condition remains stable, though his age and previous lung surgery contribute to his overall fragility.
The day included physiotherapy, participation in Lenten spiritual exercises, and prayer at the Gemelli Hospital chapel. Hospital personnel presented him with a cake in the afternoon, and he received hundreds of get-well messages and drawings from children worldwide, providing a boost to his spirits.
A Pontificate of Change
Elected in 2013, Pope francis has been credited with shifting the Church’s focus towards universality and inclusivity. Lia Pratico observed, “It was a different church before [him]. It has changed from a niche church to a worldwide church because Pope Francis is everybody’s pope, not just an Argentine Pope.” His emphasis on social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialog has resonated globally, marking a distinct era in the Catholic Church.
Pilgrims Visit Gemelli Hospital
Gemelli Hospital has become an unexpected destination for pilgrims visiting Rome, especially during the Jubilee Year celebrations. The Rev.Enrico Bortolaso, leading a group from northern Veneto, made the hospital their first stop to offer prayers. Alberto Jerbonato, part of the group, stated, “We wanted to come here to pray for him and for his recovery. We are aware that he is 88 years old, and we are fully aware of what he is facing.” The hospital visit underscores the deep connection between the faithful and the Pope, even during his illness.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
Cardinal Marcello Semeraro noted, “It’s a sort of a seat of fragility, from where he continues his ministry.” This highlights the unique situation of a Pope leading from a place of vulnerability. Pope John Paul II, who spent a considerable amount of time at Gemelli, famously referred to it as “Vatican 3.”
As Pope Francis continues his recovery, he also continues to follow his Lenten spiritual retreat. He receives oxygen and utilizes a non-invasive mechanical mask during the night, alongside ongoing physical therapy.
Looking Ahead
As Pope Francis approaches his fourth week of hospitalization, the world watches and prays for his continued recovery. His resilience and dedication to his ministry, even amidst health challenges, serve as an inspiration to millions. The pontiff’s journey also prompts deeper reflection on the evolving role of the papacy in the 21st century.

Thank you for having me. it’s a pleasure to be here.
Dr. Vance, Pope Francis recently marked his 12th anniversary as Pope, but this year, he did so from Gemelli Hospital. What’s yoru initial reaction to this unusual circumstance?
It’s certainly a poignant moment. While we celebrate his 12 years of service, the setting underscores his humanity. The positive medical updates are reassuring, but it’s a stark reminder of his age and the challenges he faces. Seeing him carry out Lenten spiritual exercises and pray at the hospital chapel highlights his unwavering dedication.
His pontificate has been characterized by a shift towards universality and inclusivity. Can you elaborate on the significance of this “Francis Effect” in reshaping the Catholic Church?
Absolutely. Pope Francis has actively worked to broaden the Church’s appeal beyond customary boundaries. His focus on social justice, environmental responsibility, and interfaith dialogue has resonated with many, particularly those who felt marginalized. He’s truly strived to be “everybody’s pope.” This has undoubtedly altered perceptions and engagement with the Church globally.
gemelli Hospital has become a sort of pilgrimage site during this time. What does it signify that pilgrims, like those from northern Veneto, are making the hospital their frist stop in Rome?
It speaks volumes about the deep connection between the faithful and Pope Francis. In times of illness, the desire to offer prayers and support is amplified. That pilgrims are specifically visiting Gemelli underscores the personal bond they feel with him, acknowledging both his strength and his vulnerability.
Cardinal Semeraro referred to the hospital as a “seat of fragility” from which the Pope continues his ministry. How does leading from a place of vulnerability impact Pope Francis’s papacy, and what message does it send to the world?
It humanizes the papacy in a profound way. By leading from a position of acknowledged vulnerability, Pope Francis embodies empathy and resilience. It sends a powerful message that strength isn’t about invincibility, but about perseverance and continuing to serve even in the face of adversity. It resonates deeply with those facing their own challenges.
Looking ahead, with Pope Francis approaching his fourth week of hospitalization, what are your thoughts on the evolving role of the papacy in the 21st century. Where do you think the church is headed under the leadership of Pope Francis.
Pope Francis’s papacy is really a model for the 21st century Church under the leadership of Pope Francis, he is leaving the church in good hand for the future of the church.
