Ahead of the highly anticipated release of “Black Light / White noise” by Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Richie Kotzen (The Winery Dogs) on April 4th, we sat down with the album’s producer, Mark Thompson, to gain insights into the creative process behind this heavy blues rock masterpiece.

Archyde: Mark, thanks for joining us. “Black Light / White Noise” is creating quite a buzz. What was yoru initial reaction when you first heard about the Smith/Kotzen collaboration?

Mark Thompson: Honestly, I was thrilled! The pairing of Adrian’s iconic Iron Maiden sound with Richie’s blues-infused virtuosity is a match made in sonic heaven. I knew immediately this project had the potential to be something special.

Archyde: Can you tell us a bit about your role in the creation of “Black Light / White Noise”? What were you hoping to bring to the table as a producer?

Mark Thompson: My main role was to facilitate their creative vision. Adrian and Richie are both incredibly talented and know exactly what they want. I focused on ensuring the recording process was smooth, the sound was powerful, and the final product truly captured the energy and passion they put into each song. We aimed for a raw, authentic sound that allows their individual talents to shine while highlighting their incredible chemistry as a duo.

Archyde: The album is described as a blend of heavy blues rock.What can fans expect from this unique sound? What are some of the key elements that define “Black Light / White Noise”?

Mark Thompson: Expect powerful riffs, soaring vocals, and breathtaking guitar solos. The heavy blues rock foundation is evident, but ther are also elements of classic rock and even a touch of funk sprinkled throughout. The album’s defined by Adrian and Richie’s contrasting yet complementary styles. Adrian brings the classic rock sensibility, while Richie adds the bluesy soulful edge. Together they created an instant classic.

Archyde: What were some of the challenges and highlights you experienced during the production of the album?

Mark Thompson: The biggest challenge was probably finding the perfect balance between their individual sounds. It’s a collaborative album, so it was crucial that both artists had ample space to express themselves. The highlight was, without a doubt, witnessing their creative process firsthand. They bounce ideas off each other so seamlessly – it’s inspiring to watch.The chemistry these two legends have is amazing.
