Mystery of Nighttime Drone Sightings Over New Jersey Deepens

A wave of unexplained nocturnal drone sightings across New Jersey has left both residents and officials perplexed, prompting calls for answers and even military intervention.

Reports of these nighttime flights, some describing drones as large as six feet in diameter, first began surfacing last month. The sightings have stretched from the New York City area through New Jersey, reaching as far westward as Philadelphia. While authorities have yet to determine the origin or purpose of these unmanned aerial vehicles, their presence has sparked concern.

Initial observations focused on the proximity of some sightings to sensitive areas, such as the Picatinny Arsenal, a major military research and manufacturing facility. Adding to the intrigue, several drones were reported near President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, raising further questions about the intent behind these mysterious flights.

Unidentified Drones Raise Concerns

While drone use is legal in New Jersey, it is governed by local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations, limiting flight patterns and requiring operators to be FAA-certified. Officials maintain that none of the reported sightings appear to pose a direct threat to public safety, but the numbers have continued to increase.

Adding further complexity to the situation, some reports suggest that the aircraft might be larger than typical hobbyist drones, potentially even larger than many law enforcement drones. This sugestion has some speculating about the drone’s capacity and origin.

Politicians Weigh In, Push for Answers

Governor Phil Murphy has publicly acknowledged the growing concern surrounding the unidentified drones, but maintained that there was no immediate threat to public safety. But, the mystery has propelled clamor for action.

Several lawmakers have pushed for a strong response. Two congressmen, U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have gone as far as proposing military intervention.

“Smith said he was briefed by a Coast Guard commanding officer about an incident this past weekend where a dozen drones trailed a Coast Guard lifeboat in a “close pursuit” near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park in Ocean County.

While the Coast Guard reports the drones posed no immediate danger and did not interrupt operations, the incident has intensified calls for investigation.
In addition to assisting the FBI with the investigation, the Coast Guard confirmed “multiple low-altitude aircraft were observed in the vicinity of one of our vessels near Island Beach State Park,” said Lieutenant Luke Pinneo.

Adding to the complexity, some reports are not even proven to be drones. The FBI urges anyone with information to come forward and emphasized seeing is believing – “Not every sighting is confirmed to actually involve a drone.”
