AI enters the Fitness Ring: Can Personalized Tech Perfect your Workout?
The world of fitness is being shaken up by artificial intelligence.
No longer relegated to coaching images on a screen, AI is showing up in gyms as personalized trainers within workout machines themselves.
Have fitness goals?
“With technology being integrated into every part of our world right now, why not fitness?” says Marc Dickerson, manager of The Exercise Coach in Lewes.
Dickerson’s clients now get workout plans tailored to their needs, all with the help of AI.
Instead of clunky gym equipment, Dickerson’s gym is home to machines called Exterbotics. These machines adapt to each user’s movements and strength, providing real-time feedback and adapting based on a range of motion test each individual undergoes.
It’s particularly helpful for older clients who might be hesitant to jump into traditional gyms, says Dickerson. “It’s a lot safer than a regular weight room," he says. “The AI can ensure a client can’t overdo it and injure themselves.”
Across town, at A4 Training in Salisbury, owner AJ Angello champions the power of the human touch in fitness.
While AI may be finding their space, Angello believes there’s no substitute for experience when it comes to a good workout. "Say you’re working out and you have a nagging injury, the app may not be able to adjust.”
That’s where A4’s trainers excel.
“We do a lot of testing procedures. We assess movement patterns and if someone’s an athlete, we do performance testing."

"We’ve seen it all,” adds Angello.”
“Yes, sometimes technology may go down, just like it did for us recently," he says with a laugh. “But our workouts went on because we know how to adapt."
Still, technology plays a role at A4, as they are equipped with an app called Team Builder. The app assists with keeping clients organized and on track, but again, it’s ultimately the human who sets their clients’ paths to success.
And whether you’re leveraging the technology of the future or relying on traditional methods, both Dickerson and Angello agree: a individualized approach to fitness is key.
“Clients ABsolutely love it. It’s something they haven’t seen before, and they get immediate feedback in real time. When it comes to fitness everyone’s different. "
Dickerson notes, "I’ve seen so many times, people in the weight room, who are unsafe. people locking their arms and jerking the weights hurt themselves.” AI can help to prevent those injuries.
Whether it’s through personalized AI assessments or detailed human observation, the ultimate goal is to achieve fitness safety and success.
“You should never hesitate to reach out and see what’s out there,” offers Dickerson,
, “The Exercise Coach is still taking clients, and encourages interested individuals to visit their website to begin their fitness journey.
