Hochman Promises ‘Law and Order,’ Tougher Stance on Crime as New LA DA

A New Sheriff in Town: Hochman Promises ‘Law and Order’ in Los Angeles

Nathan Hochman is set to take the reins as Los Angeles’ district attorney, promising a stark departure from the progressive policies of his predecessor, George Gascón. He vows to toughen up law enforcement, focusing on public safety as crime rises across the city.

Hochman’s rise, which culminates with his swearing-in on Tuesday, marks a stunning political turnaround. Just two years ago, he was the losing Republican candidate in the California Attorney General race. Back then, Hochman ran as a Republican, but identifies as a “centrist” today.

This shift indicates the changing political landscape in blue Los Angeles. Voters are increasingly frustrated with rising crime and perceiving the city is becoming less safe. They’re receptive to a more moderate approach, suggesting a shift away from the progressive policies of Gascón, who’s seen as out of touch with residents’ concerns.

Hochman’s campaign resonated with Los Angeles’ Jewish community, particularly in light of the war in Gaza. The hostaged held by Hamas weighed heavily on Hochman throughout his campaign.

“This is a daily reminder for me about this issue,” Hochman stated, making his stance on Gaza clear. “The minute you stop thinking about the hostages in Gaza is the minute that you’ll start thinking about a whole lot of other things, and then they will be forgotten.”

The war immediately following months of anti-Israel activity in L.A., which often went unpunished, pushedlators to prioritize public safety. During the election, Hochman criticized Gascon for failing to address a rise in antisemitism. In pitching his candidacy, Hochman contrasted himself with Gascon, saying:

“You want to shut down a freeway, shut down the airport, vandalize a college campus, make it impossible for students to get an education, attack Jews in front of a synagogue inPico-Robertson, you will be held accountable.”

Hochman’s call for a strong stance on accountability resonated with many members of the largely Jewish community. In fact, the Jewish community mobilized to elect Hochman, driving home the message that they sought.asam Yebri, who is a lawyer and actively raised funds for Hochman’s campaign articulated:
“The Jewish community banded together in a very unique and palpable way to not only elect a great Jewish prosecutor in Nathan Hochman, but to reject these four years of misguided policies by George Gascón.

Hochman’s a win signals a significant shift, suggesting L.A. is rejecting Gascón’s progressive approach, which critics argue prioritized perpetrators’ rights over victims’, destabilized law enforcement, and fostered a climate of growing lawlessness.

The new DA’s win was particularly important amidst a string of anti-Israel protests thatHTTP://www.sitemap.htmlturned

Hochman’s approach stands in contrast to “awakened” prosecut contemporary view Hochman voters wanted. an example

“We didn’t feel like Gascón was very receptive or listened very effectively to the Jewish community of Los Angeles. He will be more responsive and receptive, and
