Archibald Soaring Towards UCI Track Champions League Title
A dominant weekend sees Scot cement lead heading into London finale
Katie Archibald’s seemingly unstoppable march towards the UCI Track Champions League Women’s Endurance title continued in Apeldoorn last weekend. The Scot secured two second place finishes on day one of the double-header, the latest round in her quest to add this prestigious title to her impressive resume.
Round Two Success
The round began successfully on Friday night. Archibald led home the bunch in the Scratch race, with Canadian Sarah van Dam taking the win with a solo attack inside the final two kilometers. Neah Evans, Archibald’s British teammate, finished sixth, mimicking her results in Paris.
In the elimination race, Archibald stayed at the front for much of the race before being edged out in the final sprint by Norwegian Anita Stenberg. Evans, again finished sixth — an encouraging sign that after finishing an impressive third overall last year, she is finding form just at the right time.
Fatigue Plays a Role in Round Three
On Saturday, fatigue seemingly played a role in the hotly contested Scratch Race. A dogfight ensued, but with no one committing to a decisive attack, Archibald mistimed her move and finished 12th. Evans followed closely behind, two places back.
However, any mistakes were quickly forgotten in the evening’s Elimination race. Archibald produced a masterclass performance to overcome a rematch with the Mexican Acevedo after the two battled in Paris last week.
This victory cemented Archibald’s deck-chair atop the women’s endurance standings. Stenberg, her closest rival, finished down in ninth place, valueable, extending Archibald’s lead to 27 points.
“Indecision really caught me out in the Scratch race, but damage control has been okay in the Elimination,” Archibald shared afterward. ,“They’re a great cycling nation and they get excited by the sport. It’s nice to be in a stadium that enjoys wins by their home favorites, but I think they give every rider a big mark of respect. It’s such a privilege to be a British rider in this series and for the Finale to be the most special round for us!”
