UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza Conflict: Aid Delivery and Ceasefire Negotiations

2023-12-23 15:00:54

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for more aid to the Gaza Strip. The vote came following days of negotiations to avoid a veto by the US, a key ally of Israel and a permanent member of the council. Meanwhile, the council failed to call for a cease-fire in Gaza. The resolution was put to the vote with fundamental changes in terms as per the US demand.

13 members voted in favor of the resolution. The US and Russia abstained from the vote. The resolution was introduced by the UAE. Immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip must be possible. The resolution also called for smooth implementation of this process. It is also suggested that a coordinator be appointed to oversee the UN system that will be formed to speed up and streamline aid delivery. Although the resolution called for the creation of conditions to end the war forever, it did not call for an immediate end to the war.

Russia, one of the council’s five permanent members, had tabled an amendment to return to the draft calling for an immediate ceasefire. The vote on the resolution took place following the US vetoed the amendment. The resolution introduced by Russia was supported by 10, the US opposed and four countries abstained from voting. The US vetoed two resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Hamas responded that the resolution, which did not call for an immediate ceasefire, was inadequate. Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebentsya, accused the US of using its favorite tactic of intimidation to get things done in the resolution. UN chief Antonio Guterres said the real problem with aid delivery is Israel’s continued aggression. The UN has warned that Gaza might face famine if Israeli attacks continue.
